1. Acceptance of Terms

By accessing or using chia187.com (the "Site"), registering for a membership, accessing the private member directory, or registering for a conference or event, you ("Member" or "User") agree to be bound by these Terms and Conditions ("Terms"). If you do not agree to these Terms, please do not use the Site.

We reserve the right to update or modify these Terms at any time. Continued use of the Site after changes are posted constitutes your acceptance of the revised Terms.

2. About CHIA

The California Homicide Investigators Association is a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting homicide investigators through professional development, networking, and resources. Membership in CHIA and access to its online platform are privileges, not rights, and are subject to the terms set forth herein.

3. Membership Eligibility and Approval

Membership in CHIA and access to the private member directory are not automatic. All membership applications are subject to review and approval by a CHIA administrator. Submission of a membership application and payment does not guarantee acceptance.

  • CHIA reserves the right to approve or deny any membership application at its sole discretion.
  • If your application is denied, you will be notified and any membership payment will be refunded.
  • Membership may be revoked at any time for violation of these Terms or conduct deemed detrimental to the organization.

4. Member Directory — Confidentiality and Permitted Use

Access to the CHIA private member directory is provided exclusively for professional networking and communication among verified CHIA members.

Members agree that they will not:

  • Share, distribute, publish, sell, or otherwise disclose directory information (including names, contact details, agency affiliations, or any other member data) to any person or entity outside of the CHIA membership.
  • Use directory information for commercial solicitation, marketing, or any purpose unrelated to legitimate CHIA member activities.
  • Screenshot, copy, export, or reproduce directory listings in any format for external use.

Violation of these confidentiality obligations may result in immediate membership revocation and may expose the member to legal liability.

5. Code of Conduct

All members are expected to conduct themselves in a professional and respectful manner in all interactions through the Site, including the member directory, event registrations, and any communications facilitated through the platform.

Members agree to:

  • Treat fellow members, CHIA staff, and event participants with respect and professionalism.
  • Refrain from harassment, discrimination, or any abusive behavior of any kind.
  • Provide accurate and truthful information in their member profile and applications.
  • Comply with all applicable federal, state, and local laws in connection with their use of the Site and participation in CHIA activities.

CHIA reserves the right to suspend or terminate the membership of any individual found to be in violation of this Code of Conduct, without refund.

6. Membership Fees and No-Refund Policy

Membership fees are established by CHIA and are subject to change. By submitting payment, you agree to the following:

  • All membership fees are non-refundable, except in the case of a denied membership application (see Section 3).
  • All membership fees are non-transferable.
  • Membership fees cover the membership period at the time of purchase through the end of that calendar year, and do not carry over or prorate upon early termination.
  • Failure to use membership benefits does not entitle a member to a refund.

Payments are processed through Wild Apricot's platform via Affinipay. CHIA does not store payment card information.

7. Conference and Event Registration

CHIA periodically hosts conferences and events open to members and, in some cases, invited guests. The following terms apply to event registrations:

Cancellation Policy:

  • Cancellations made before the cancellation date listed for each event will receive a full refund of the registration fee.
  • Cancellations made after the cancellation date listed for each event date will NOT receive a refund.
  • Registrations may be transferred to another eligible member at no charge with advance written notice to CHIA.
  • Registrations may be carried over and transferred to another eligible member within the same organization at no charge with advance written notice to CHIA.

Event Changes:

  • CHIA reserves the right to modify, postpone, or cancel events. In the event of a cancellation by CHIA, registered attendees will receive a full refund of their registration fee.

9. Disclaimer of Warranties

The Site and its content are provided "as is" without warranties of any kind, express or implied. CHIA does not warrant that the Site will be uninterrupted, error-free, or free of viruses or other harmful components.

10. Limitation of Liability

To the fullest extent permitted by law, CHIA shall not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, or consequential damages arising out of or related to your use of the Site, membership, or participation in CHIA events.

11. Governing Law

These Terms shall be governed by and construed in accordance with the laws of the State of California, without regard to its conflict of law provisions. Any disputes arising under these Terms shall be resolved in the appropriate courts located in California.

12. Termination

CHIA reserves the right to suspend or terminate your access to the Site and membership at any time, with or without cause, including for violation of these Terms. Upon termination, your right to access the member directory and other member benefits will immediately cease.
